WHAT CHANGED
SENATOR COLLINS?

What Changed Senator Collins

Two decades ago during impeachment, Senator Collins was outspoken in her support of a fair process, including witnesses and evidence. As the Senate faces the same scenario now, Senator Collins refuses to make the same demands.

It’s time for Senator Collins to commit to a fair process, stand up to Mitch McConnell, and demand a proper trial in the Senate.

Then & Now

In 1999, Senator Collins called for “‘more evidence’ and ‘witnesses,’ in order to ‘get to the truth,’ and to fulfill the Senate’s ‘duty to do impartial justice’” ahead of the impeachment trial. More than two decades later, Collins will only say she’s “open” to witnesses. To ensure a fair trial, she needs to demand their inclusion.

WHAT SENATOR COLLINS
USED TO SAY

"

I am concerned about proposals to immediately move to dismiss the charges before we even hear arguments and before we hear some key witnesses. I think that can be done in a manner that is fair to the president, consistent with the Constitution, and enables us to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities.

SENATOR Collins, Fox News,
January 5, 1999

"

“I am willing to travel the road wherever it leads, whether it's to the conviction or the acquittal of the president; but in order to do that, I need more evidence. I need witnesses and further evidence to guide me to the right destination, to get to the truth.
